Think you can spot dirty water at a glance? Think again! There’s more to water than what meets the eye.

Your glass of water can mean the difference between life and death. So how sure are you that the water you’re consuming is 100% clean and safe?

A poll by the official Beverage Industry website revealed 9 out of 10 Americans prefer bottled water, with many leaning towards healthier variants like alkaline water. What exactly is driving this tectonic shift away from regular, cost-effective tap water? Let’s find out!

Fact: Water systems serve millions of people across the United States. Yet many fail to satisfy state and federal safety requirements.

Over the last decade, around 63 million individuals (roughly a fifth of the population of the United States) have been exposed to potentially unsafe and contaminated water at least once. PNAS Research revealed that “nearly 21 million people relied on community water systems that violated health-based quality standards. The CDC reported that 7.2 million Americans fall sick every year from water-borne diseases. Preventable deaths!

Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, USA Today News reported that many American water towers are rotting.

Water storage tanks, particularly those that sit atop towers with logos emblazoned on them, have long served as the most visible symbol of a utility most of us take for granted – safe, clean water. They’ve since devolved into one of the public water supply’s most vulnerable points. This is because an entry point as tiny as a few millimeters could mean the difference between safe, clean water or contaminated water with dead animals or animal excrement.

Health inspectors have found bloated and decomposing snakes, rodents and even raccoons floating in these water storage tanks. Every day Americans rely on these water tanks for drinking, bathing, cleaning, and feeding their children!

Some of these water towers have NEVER been reconditioned or cleaned since they were built decades ago!

Experts at the WHO say “Contaminated water can transmit diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio” and “contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause 485 000 diarrhoeal deaths each year".

But stories like these aren’t new. 7 years ago, researchers, sampled sediment in about 18 US water tanks in the USA. The discovery was horrifying. Deadly bacterium Legionella that can cause a serious, fatal type of pneumonia was present in MOST tanks!

Bottom line? No maintenance: No safety!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The estimated cost of refurbishing these tanks to give the American people safe and clean drinking water is approximately $47 billion according to what USA TODAY reported about the EPA. Till then, the towers will continue to deteriorate and people will continue to get sicker.

To quote renowned University of Arizona’s Environmental Health Professor, Kelly Reynolds, “It’s an endemic level of illness that we just sort of live with. We have to decide, is it an acceptable risk?”

We say it isn’t.

The only way out is to take matters into our own hands.
